Mammography

A mammogram is an X-ray test that takes detailed images of the breast. It is mainly used to screen for early signs of breast cancer, before a lump can be felt. Mammograms can show changes like small calcifications, masses, or abnormal tissue patterns. They help doctors detect tumors, check areas that feel different on physical exam, and monitor the breasts over time. It is an effective tool for routine breast cancer screening in women. A mammography technologist is the professional who performs your mammogram. They guide you step by step, explain what to expect, and make small adjustments to get the best images with the least discomfort possible. The full appointment takes about 15 minutes. Once the mammogram is complete, they send the images to the radiologist, who will interpret the results, which will be sent to your doctor.

How do I prepare for my mammogram?

Please advise staff if you have any breast surgery or implants when making an appointment.

Please do not use any deodorant, powder, or cream on the chest/breast/armpit on the day of your exam. Otherwise you can follow your normal routine — eat, drink, and take your regular medications.

You will need to undress from the waist up for the imaging procedure. A medical gown or drape will be provided.

Please tell your healthcare provider if you’re breastfeeding, pregnant, or think you may be pregnant. They may recommend the best time to get a mammogram or suggest starting with an ultrasound.
